I have windows XP. Can I go into my registry editor and delete the "Disable SR"?
December 28th, 2009 | by admin |Something got into my computer and disabled my system restore. I have found the command in my registry editor. Can I delete it? Also I found a bogus anti-virus program that I thought I had gotten rid of in my registry editor as well. Can I get rid of it too?
You must remove first the virus on your system.
Then you can remove Disable SR.
To remove this key :
Click on the start button => Run
Past and run this code
REG DELETE HKLM\SOFTWARE \Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\SystemRestore /v DisableSR /f
PS: Remove the space between SOFTWARE and \Policies
Alternatively, you can remove it easily with this free software:
http://www.net-studio.org/eng/windows-optimum.html
Download and launch it
Click on restriction
Click on uncheck all
Click on save changes

If you have a virus or malware doing that, it may just re-enter the lines, hiding in your boot sector or somewhere else. Run antivirus scan and malware scan. If you choose to edit your registry, back it up first. Maybe even screen print before you delete anything.
You can back up your registry by clicking FLLE, EXPORT and saving it to a folder on your drive. Then you can import it to restore it if needed.
Messing with the registry is always something to treat with caution and a dose of paranoia.

whenever you are in registry editor you need to know exactly what you are doing. if you dont, you should just put down your mouse and call a pro. the system restore is in system settings and NOT in registry editor. right click "my computer" in the start menu and select the tab that says system protection or sytem restore or something like that.
