Your fundamental strategy should be intrusion PREVENTION: achieved with a layered defense.
Keep 'automatic browser action' out until you approve of the it. A minor pain in the adz when compared to re-formatting & data loss or compromised banking & credit card info.

Stop using Internet Explorer!
Instead, use Firefox, with 'NoScript' add-on; "locked down" settings; set as default browser, with all Microsoft installed rubbish (hacks) disabled; look in Tools> Add on's> Extensions & Plug-in's. (NET framework, Windows Presentation Foundation, Shockwave, Silverlight, Java stuff, or other active scripting rubbish.)
My personal Firefox Collection, for improved security, and a tad bit of 'appearance' mod's. here:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/collection/dunbarpappy

Use a "Limited User" account and "Sandboxie": http://www.sandboxie.com/
for even better protection.

Core defense applications might include (but not limited to):
Avast! (anti-virus); http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download
or Avira.
"MalwareBytes" works for rubbish already plaguing you.

Always incorporate a stout firewall: Some freeware is here: http://www.snapfiles.com/Freeware/security/fwfirewall.html
Look them over and match your needs to skill level.

SpywareBlaster (snoopware prevention and hostfile guardian); http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

If you don't have time or skill for all this (plus 'updating'), have a look @ "Secunia": checks all your 3rd party & OS version for updates.
Freeware.

Most novice users do not like hearing this, but nonetheless, it's true: using Windows requires you to become a security expert, it's that simple.
Windows has been 'oversold' to a hoodwinked general public, and is badly broken on many levels.
Something they conveniently omit telling you when you buy this system...

Making all these changes seems overwhelming, and it is a pain in the keester; BUT IT MUST BE DONE.
Either that, or use Linux for all Internet work.
References :
This is a great program that will work along side of your antivirus program. You can run this program yourself at anytime. It will scan for hijacks, spyware and optimizate your computer for maximum speed.

Advanced SystemCare Personal 3.2.0

Select the "Download now" button ..Not the "Download Here" on the banner.

Is there anything I can run in cooperation (at the same time as) with my antivirus software?
I'd be willing to pay for the software or if it's freeware that would be nice too.
I have a security antivirus package which includes realtime, scans, firewall. Is there anything which you would recommend I run with it at the same time which would effectively increase my computers security? Without interfering with the antivirus software ofcourse.
I've started a monthly security review of my workstation which will involve reviewing efficiency of various software, security reports/ viruses detected (and their sources/ cause of them being on the computer), browser security etc.
Any other tips or advice would be appreciated too, thanks.
Thanks, I already use Firefox of course (having used the internet regularly since 2005), I got Secunia for personal use and it looks really promising, I'll definitely be running that regularly now. My browser is already pretty secure as is my computer but I was just looking to reinforce existing security - I have tried malware bytes in the past and found it to be unnecessary.
